Himalaya Visitor Centre Takes Shape at Twycross

Adey Steel Ltd has completed the first phase installation of the main steel structure for the new landmark visitor centre at Twycross Zoo in Warwickshire. The 200 tonne steel frame measures 72m by 42m and is due for completion during August with the centre due to open in February 2010.

"The leopard enclosure forms part of our second phase of works," explained Eric Gaunt, contract manager for Adey Steel Ltd. "The tensioned structure will be formed by tubular columns and restraint guys with stainless steel netting draped over it. On the opposite elevation another enclosure housing a wetland aviary will be constructed in a similar manner."

The £7m development named ‘Himalaya’ stands to provide a 300-seat restaurant, retail space and conference facilities as well as acting as the new tourist information and visitor centre for the zoo.

Zoo Director Suzanne Boardman said: “We are really excited about the new centre. This is a major development and is one of a number of improvements to be completed to attract more visitors and support our bid to make Twycross Zoo the best zoological society in the world."
